The makeup I chose for this year’s Halloween performances were based more on glamour and less on gore, with an experiment using my loose pigments mixed with a certain medium that made them like liquid metal.  Unfortunately they cracked after drying due to all the facial movements, but I learned something and that’s what I like about makeup.  Of course I did the clown face for Funerary and Feast Of Flesh; did not add blood and think in the future that I should because it is a signature of the character.

On Halloween itself I did not wear a costume and was pretty much an exaggerated version of myself.  Or I just wanted an excuse to glue shiny things to my face since I am still missing my facial jewelry.  All hair accessories were also crafted by me and I am always open to commissions.

Halloween Horror

[Originally written on this date in 2004]

Everything started out fine and yet the result was a castastrophe, an event that has shaken me to the point where I have no idea how to even begin writing about what has happened.  My hands are trembling and I am doing my best to type through my tears - so glad I am by myself because I do not want anyone to see me so broken, yet I kind of wish I had someone here to comfort me.

There are some moments in time that shape your life forever or have such a huge impact your entire world crumbles.  Watching my best friend go from indestructible Daredevil to a pile of human rubble was definitely one of those moments, and the event changed us both in ways I never expected.  This was also the last time Jon ever  performed, and maybe that is why I find it important to keep the Halloween tradition alive.

Creepy Cool

Enjoying seasonable activities such as picking pumpkins, scouting peak foliage or winding through a haunted corn maze calls for festive fashion that embraces some of the imagery associated with what I feel is one of the grandest holidays we have.

Made a list of things I need to acquire or fabricate for my costume.  Getting bored of doing zombie clown, so I am doing Jersey Trash super decadent party clown this year. Which means lots of lace, sparkle and everything ridiculously over the top.  Have quite a few challenging pieces but I am fairly confident I can get everything finished in time and it will be fantastic when it is all put together.

Dressing up as “a Native American” furthers the already popular notion that they aren’t real, diverse, complex human beings. There’s a reason that dressing up as a white guy isn’t nearly as effective on Halloween; there’s no homogenous vision of what White Guy looks like. If you’ve developed a homogenous vision of a particular race, enough that you could conceive of a good costume, then just fucking stay home for the evening.

Dia De Los Muertos Is Not Your Halloween by Nuestra Hermana

As we all know, Halloween in America is right around the corner. Kids & adults alike will be dressed up in costumes, consuming candy, attending parties, navigating through haunted houses and thoroughly enjoying their night. Think about your last Halloween and look at the images above.

These are still shots of Dia De Los Muertos in Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, California & Arizona. They are small snippets of a vibrant, important and REAL holiday for Latin@s. This is not your Halloween.

Dia De Los Muertos developed out of over 2,500 years of indigenous ritual celebrating death and paying respects to loved ones who have passed away. Scholars state that the Aztecs originally held a month long festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the ruler of the afterlife.

After Spanish colonization and many attempts to eradicate the rituals & festival, a new merging with the Catholic holidays All Souls Day & All Saints Day developed over time to what is now Dia De Los Muertos.

Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated November 1st & 2nd (in alignment with All Saints Day & All Souls Day respectively). It is NOT celebrated on October 31st, it is not tied in with Halloween in America at all.

In Mexico, November 1st is dedicated as Dia De Los Inocentes, a day to honor and respect the innocents, children & infants to be more specific. November 2nd is Dia De Los Muertos, the day to honor deceased adults.

On these days, altars are made in honor of them. People build them on their loved ones graves, at home or anywhere they find rightful to honor their loved ones. They make ofrendas (offerings) to the dead of their favorite foods, toys (for children), pictures, pan de muertos, sugar skulls and many other things that help guide the spirits of the dead safely to the altars. Marigolds, known as the flowers of the dead, are usually prominent in the altars.

In Mexico, many people sleep overnight at the graves. Every ritual & altar is not the same everywhere. Many places have their own traditions and ways of honoring the dead. One thing is for sure, Dia De Los Muertos is not Halloween. It is a sacred time and holiday for Latin@s everywhere.

So, when you’re dressing up for Halloween remember: doing this, this, this or this is not only disrespectful but it is also a erasure of someone’s real life culture. Think before you walk out of that door.

Just got an e-mail confirmation that Outlaw Cirkus will be doing an exclusive horror themed show at Motel Hell in South Philly come October.  Definitely going to be bringing out the gore for this one and am excited to be performing for Halloween again.

The date is tentative at the moment, but once it is fully confirmed I am making an awesome flier and can look forward to infecting the streets with it.

Of course we need an MC even more now but every time someone wants to be considered for the position, they never follow through and I do not have the time for that.
